Eligibility to Begin the Citizenship Naturalization Process
To be eligible for U.S. citizenship through the naturalization process, you must meet the following requirements:
1. Permanent Resident Status:
You must be a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for at least 5 years.
If you are married to a U.S. citizen, you must be a permanent resident for at least 3 years.
2. Age Requirement:
You must be at least 18 years old at the time of filing your application.
3. Continuous Residence:
You must have lived continuously in the U.S. for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen).
You must not have any single absence from the U.S. for more than 1 year during this period.
4 .Physical Presence:
You must have been physically present in the U.S. for at least 30 months out of the 5 years (or 18 months out of 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen) immediately preceding your application.
5. Residence in USCIS District:
You must have lived for at least 3 months in the state or USCIS district where you are applying.
6. Good Moral Character:
You must demonstrate good moral character during the statutory period (typically 5 years or 3 years for spouses of U.S. citizens).
7. English Language Proficiency:
You must be able to read, write, speak, and understand basic English.
